Description
Morton Stadium (the National Athletics Stadium, Santry Stadium) is an athletics stadium located in Santry Demense, Ireland. It is the main venue for various athletics events in Dublin. The stadium has been the permanent home for different Irish A.F.C.
The total capacity of Morton Stadium is 4,000. There is only one covered stand with the capacity of 800 seats. It used to be the home of Shamrock Rovers and Dublin City.
Morton Stadium was built in 1958, and in the same year, Herb Elliott, an Australian athlete set the world record for the mile (3 min. 54.5 sec.).
In 1959, the ground was significantly damaged due to the bomb explosion. In 1978, the surface of the ground was renewed by installing a tartan track, which made the stadium to be the 2nd such venue in Ireland. In the 1990s, the ground was renamed after Billy Morton, who made a great contribution to the development of the stadium, particularly, made it recognized by inviting famous athletes to the ground. In 2003, the stadium held athletics competitions during the Special Olympics World Games. Both indoor and outdoor tracks were relayed in 2010.
