The stadium boasts a retractible pitch and retractible roof and has a total capacity of 61,524 although this is reduced for international mathes to 53,994. The stadium was built in 2001 for the tournament and hosted the 2004 Champions League final between Portuguese FC Portal and French AS Monaco.

The stadium hosted 5 games during the 2006 World Cup including Poland vs Equador; USA vs Czech Republic, Argintenia vs Serbia and Montenegro, Portugal vs Mexico and England vs Portugal.
