Description:

The new Wembley Stadium (a.k.a. Empire Stadium) will be one of the most fantastic and expensive sporting Venues on the planet once it has been completed in 2006 costing an estimated £750,000,000 ($1.2B).

The new Wembley will not be just home to football - it will also host a number of other sporting events including Rugby League and will even have the capability to host Athletics and big name music events - A synthetic running track can be installed over some of the lower seats around the circumferance of the playing area for athletics use. This will help London in its Bid to stage the Olympics for the first time since 1948.

It's most striking feature will be a huge 133m high arch, spanning a vast 315m that will be visible from all over London and will be illuminated on the day of a major sporting event. The arch will be used to support what is believed to be the largest single span roofing structure in the world. The stadium will hold a total of 90,000 supporters, making the stadium the largest all seater, fully covered stadium in the world. It will have a circumference of 1km. Each seat will have at least 1.92 square metres of leg room, which the official Wembley stadium website states is more space than the Royal Box in the old Wembley.

The stadium is scheduled to officially open for the 2006 FA Cup Final - although there will be a number of other smaller events within the stadium during a facilites testing phase from early 2006.

The construction status for the new stadium is ahead of schedule.

Directions:

By Tube
The nearest underground stations to Wembley Stadium are Wembley Park and Wembley Central, both are extremely close to the stadium which is heavily signposted (Wembley will be clearly visible and there will more than likely be a huge trail of people to follow if you are attending an important game). For the best view of the stadium arriving at Wembley Park is recommended. The newly renovated Wembley Park serves the Jubalee and Metropolitan lines. Wembley Central serves the Bakerloo line.

By Rail:
Any London station with an underground connection can be used to get to the stadium via the underground. It is recommended that you use the underground to get to the stadium. There is also the Wembley Stadium station that is located behind the station giving connections to the midlands and central London.

By Road:
It is not recommended to drive to the stadium due to heavy traffic volumes. Good advise it to drive to a suburb of London with tube access and get a tube train to Wembley.

If however you do decide to drive to Wembley the directions are below: -

The complex is situated close to the North Circular Road (A406), which provides easy access from four adjacent motorways - The M1, M4, M40 and M25. It also links with the A1 and A40 and southbound routes via the South Circular.

Parking:
On site parking is available for up to 6,000 cars and coaches.

By Air:
There are four International airports in London: Stanstead, Heathrow, Gatwick and London City. They all offer tube or rail access to the centre of the City - follow tube directions from there. London City airport is located close to theJubalee line which connects straight to Wembley.
