Built in 1909 and designed by Scottish Architect 'Archibald Leitch', Old Trafford has always had a reputation of being one of the most superior stadium in English football. The fist match at the ground was not played until 1910 however.
The record Attendance at Old Trafford was recorded as 76,962 during a FA Cup Semi Final in 1939 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The stadium has been completely redeveloped over recent years since the Taylor report and since 1989 the capacity has steadily increased from 44,000 to 76,000
A unique feature of Old Trafford is that the players tunnel is in the corner of the ground. It was moved here during redevelopment in 1993. The old tunnel is still visible but no longer used
In 2006, the ground was expanded to 76,000 by the filling in of the North West and North East corners of the ground. If the South stand was also built to the same size of the rest of the stadium, then the capacity of Old Trafford would be around 90,000, however due to there being a residential area directly behind the South stand, there is no plans to do this in the immediate future.
This is an aerial view of Old Trafford taken in 2001 following renovation work.
